"Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin, Motown's Smokey Robinson, American Idol’s Melinda Doolittle, Kristin Chenoweth, Melissa Etheridge and Ben Folds are just some of the big names coming to the Cincinnati Pops in the upcoming seasons.
“The stars have aligned,” says Cincinnati Pops conductor John Morris Russell. “The types of artists we often get are not just in the symphonic world, but in the world of cinema, and television and popular music. And, man, to get all of those things to line up – it’s immense.”
December is the orchestra’s busiest time when the Pops presents its annual “Holiday Pops,” this time headlined by Melinda Doolittle, star of American Idol, accompanied by the traditional cast of singers and dancers and a visit from Santa. Doolittle will headline 5 Holiday performances at Cincinnati’s Taft Theatre, the orchestra’s “home away from home” while Music Hall undergoes a major renovation.
